Slickrock Adventures - Belize 2014

On April 7th, 2014 I flew into Belize City to capture photo and video footage of the adventurous travel destination, Slickrock Adventures. Slickrock is a popular travel location dedicated to teaching travelers how to sea kayak, surf, surf kayak, paddleboard, fish from a kayak, windsurf, kitesurf, snorkel, dive, whitewater kayak, raft and cave. I was hoping to catch some unique footage for a promo video for the company.

Upon arrival, I was immediately thrust into the island style of living. The place where I stayed was on the peninsula of the island and contained sand for a floor and open windows. I was shown where all of the necessities were; the cleanest drinking water, the kitchen, the toilets, which happened to be compost toilets, and where the sport equipment was located.

I began my sporting, video graphing and photographing with a common snorkel orientation practice put on by Slickrock. The orientation is held extremely close, less than 100 yards away from the shore. Here, I was able to see the reef where majorities of the fish live.

In the evening, after the snorkel session ended, I assembled my multi-rotor helicopter for a test drive. The wind was light when I first began but ended up being too strong for my copter, forcing me land.

On the first full day of being on the island, we decided to kite. The winds were strong and heading North East, perfect for a day of kite boarding. I began my day by kiting with some of the kite instructors at Slickrock, Alex and Jasmine.

Later on I took a stand up paddle board, the Jimmy Lewis, and spent some time exploring and paddle boarding around the tropical island.

Carlos, a local Brazilian from Guatemala who has been working with Slickrock for about 5 years was assigned to be my assistant for the rest of my stay.

With Carlos now at my side I decided to film Jasmine as she was snorkeling through the island waters. Carlos directed us to snorkel past the orientation practice location where we could possibly find lion fish.

On the final day of adventuring in Slickrock Adventures, the weather was not in favor of kiteboarding. The surf was very small but I was able to catch in some stand up paddleboard surfing. I met one of the guests of Slickrock who was very interested in SUP surfing, so I gave him a few pointers.

With not much else to do I asked Lucy, one of the staff members, if I could take the boat, the girls, and some stand up paddleboards down to South Western Caye, home of the only bar. Normally the staff would not have been allowed to take a several hour boat trip to the Southwestern Cayes bar, but since we were on a photoshoot they thought it was a great idea.

When we arrived, we parked the boat and walked right up to the thatched roof bar. The bar offered strong Long Islands and not so good Piña Coladas. When we were ready to leave, Carlos and Jasmine had a difficult time docking the boat. Moving it several times, tangling the SUP boards around the pier. Perhaps it was the rum?

After eight days of kiting, paddleboarding, kayaking and capturing scenes of the tropical Belize island for Slickrock Adventures I returned home to California.
